coin jar finds
Ok I went through a coin jar today-- not too big, the size of a bonne maman jam-jar and found:
one 1940 nickel one wheat penny 45 also I found 2 state quarters I needed for a folder 2 westward journey nickels 1 canda cent with an interesting octagonal edge 1 strange but nifty token my son will like Not bad for ten minutes sorting |
Re: coin jar finds
one 1940 nickel - Worth 5 cents
one wheat penny 45 - Worth 3 cents also I found 2 state quarters I needed for a folder - Worth 25 cents each 2 westward journey nickels - Worth 5 cents 1 canda cent with an interesting octagonal edge - Worth less than 1 cent :confused_m: |
Re: coin jar finds
thanks for your input. of course I can use the canada penny interchangeably with US ones and 2 nickels are worth ten cents not five.
anyhow, they're worth the trouble to put in cardboards, and then they will take up a cozy place in a cigar box of mine or my kids. |

Re: coin jar finds
True, I should have clairified the comment about the nickels with the word each at the end of the sentance.
I certainly meant no insult, but I recently went through a big pile of change that was from an estate to help out my mother in law who is handling the inventory. Most of the change was stuff worth no more than face value - bicentinial quarters, Kennedy haves that contain no silver, ike dollars, etc. If you want to collect FRNs or FRN change, just for the heck of it - no problem. Its just that a lot of folks collect coinage thinking its a collector piece, when its just worth the face value. Personally, I'd rather convert my FRNs into gold, silver or even a bank account where I will get some sort of interest. Chris |
Re: coin jar finds
that sounds like your ma is a decent executor, as most people never seem to report what the "find" of the decedent's cash on hand ... at least it rarely makes it on any court filed inventory-- nor do silver coins unless it's a big enough trove that needs a professional auction...

Re: coin jar finds
The metal value in the nickels and pennies are worth more than face, regardless of date or type. Some people enjoy collecting stuff, too. I like wheat pennies, for instance. Last time I mined a $25 box of pennies I found quite a few.
